Samuel L. Jackson’s MCU Phase 5 Debut: Uncovering the Secrets of Secret Invasion Episode 1 Recap and Ending

Disclaimer: This article contains major spoilers from Secret Invasion episode 1-2

After several captivating series featuring our beloved Avengers and new superheroes in a variety of genres, from sitcoms to detective dramas, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) returns with a fresh series. Secret Invasion, directed by Ali Selim and starring Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury, is a thrilling departure from the usual MCU formula. Cobie Smulders returns as Maria Hill, alongside Olivia Coleman making her MCU debut as special agent Sonya Falsworth. Ben Mendelsohn returns as General Talos, Emilia Clarke joins as Skrull G’iah, and more. Like recent MCU series, Secret Invasion continues the trend of ground-level storytelling, focusing on the conflict between shape-shifting Skrulls and Fury. Trust is a scarce commodity in this espionage thriller that spans six episodes.

Secret Invasion takes place years after the events of Captain Marvel (2019), in which Nick Fury and Carol Danvers promised the Skrulls a new home but failed to deliver. These broken promises have massive repercussions, especially when dealing with a powerful alien race capable of assuming the appearance of loved ones. The first two episodes of the series, unlike the popular comic book run, prioritize a lack of superhero action, with only an off-duty James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) making an appearance.

Filmfare had the privilege of previewing the first two episodes of Secret Invasion. Let’s dive into what transpires in the premiere and what it sets up for the next episode.

Episode 1: What Happens

Episode 1 of Secret Invasion begins in Moscow, Russia. Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) meets with Agent Prescod, who reveals that the Skrulls are responsible for global terrorist attacks. Ross remains skeptical but agrees to contact Nick Fury on Earth to investigate, after Prescod presents evidence to support his claims. However, when Ross starts acting suspiciously, Prescod senses something is amiss and attacks him. After a thrilling chase, Ross is revealed to be a Skrull named Talos. This prompts Nick Fury’s return to Earth as he teams up with Maria Hill and Talos to counter the Skrull insurgency.

Talos briefs Nick Fury on the rebel Skrulls who have grown tired of waiting for a new home. These Skrulls have assumed human form and orchestrated terrorist attacks to eradicate humans from the planet. It becomes evident that there are more Skrulls than Fury initially believed. Talos, ousted from the Skrull council, has been replaced by rebel leader Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir). Meanwhile, James Rhodes discusses Fury’s absence on the space station with the President, who tasks Rhodes with dealing with the situation.

Secret Invasion

Fury gets kidnapped during a walk and is surprised to encounter MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth, an old ally, at his destination. Meanwhile, G’iah and rebel Skrulls, who have been living in dormant nuclear power plants due to their immunity to radioactivity, recruit another Skrull. It is revealed that they are not just assuming human form but also seizing control of their captives’ minds. Notably, G’iah is Talos’ daughter, and she has joined forces with Gravik. Gravik has a personal stake in halting the insurgency.

Episode 1: The Shocking Ending

The most shocking moment in Secret Invasion episode 1 is Maria Hill’s death. As a long-standing character in the Marvel roster, her demise in a series that had the potential to delve into her story further raises eyebrows. Gravik kills Maria, leaving Fury devastated and burdened with guilt. This heartbreaking scene fittingly complements the prevailing sense of loss throughout the show. Maria had placed her trust in Fury and consistently supported him since their first encounter in The Avengers (2012). She dies in Fury’s arms, leaving him without one of his most crucial allies and complicating matters for the U.S.

What to Expect in Episode 2

While the first episode lays the groundwork, the next episode picks up the pace. Without revealing too much, Fury must deal with the aftermath of the terrorist attack, coping not only with personal loss but also the consequences of Maria’s death. Episode 2 will shed light on the rebel Skrulls’ plans, and Fury will receive an unexpected visit from an old friend bearing intriguing information and intentions.

The first episode of Secret Invasion is now available for streaming.
