Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been unveiled as the upcoming 2D installment in the Super Mario game series, scheduled to launch later this year.
Nintendo introduced this new 2D side-scrolling Mario game during today’s Nintendo Direct, providing a closer look at its exciting new power-ups and platforming action. The debut trailer also appears to showcase the game’s four-player cooperative gameplay.
The distinguishing feature of this game is the Wonder Flower power-up—a flower that bears resemblance to previous entries but offers more than just the ability to shoot fireballs. Instead, the Wonder Flower grants Mario a Wonder Ability that can unpredictably alter the stage. For instance, one usage of the Wonder Flower transforms Mario into a towering figure, while another stage sees the legendary plumber’s green pipes come to life.
“Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the next evolution of 2D side-scrolling Super Mario Bros. games, is coming to Nintendo Switch,” states the official description of the game. “Touching a Wonder Flower in the game unlocks the wonders of the world—pipes could animate, hordes of enemies may appear, characters might change their appearance—transforming the gameplay in unexpected ways. Each course promises excitement and unique surprises.”
In addition to the new power-ups, Super Mario Bros. Wonder will feature familiar characters like Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, and Yoshi as playable options alongside Mario, Luigi, and Toad.
Super Mario. Bros Wonder will be available on Nintendo Switch starting October 20, 2023.
In other exciting news, Nintendo also announced the return of Detective Pikachu with a sequel to the popular 3DS game. Furthermore, a remake of Super Mario Bros RPG is in the works, as well as an untitled game centered around Princess Peach.
