Bryan Cranston, known for Breaking Bad, lent his voice to Lord Rama in Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama!

Adipurush, starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Saif Ali Khan, has evoked nostalgia among the audience since its release on June 16. The movie reminds people of their beloved Ramayana, which they watched in the 1990s on Doordarshan or Cartoon Network.

Did you know that in 1992, an anime film titled Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama was produced and directed by Japanese filmmaker Yogo Sako? This film, available in both Hindi and English, captures the essence of the Ramayana in a unique way. Inspired by the excavations near Prayagraj, Yogo Sako decided that an animated film would better depict the story of Ramayana compared to a live-action movie. According to Yogo, “Because Ram is a God, I felt it was best to depict him in animation, rather than using an actor.”

The original Indian version of the film featured the voices of popular actors such as Arun Govil as Lord Rama, Amrish Puri as Ravana, Namrata Sawhney as Sita, and Shatrughan Sinha as the narrator.

In 2001, the film was edited and released in the US as Warrior Prince or The Prince of Light: The Legend of Ramayana. It was during this release that Bryan Cranston, famous for his role as Walter White in Breaking Bad, lent his voice for Lord Rama. Moreover, the film had narration by the renowned James Earl Jones, popularly known for voicing Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise.

Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama received global appreciation and recognition, including in Japan. However, the film faced a ban in India for more than three years due to the polarized and communal environment during the Babri Masjid riots. The Hindi version of the film was finally broadcasted on Doordarshan in 1995, and both versions are now accessible on YouTube.
