PLDT to Erect Largest Data Hub Yet, Generating 100-MW

The PLDT Group is set to build its largest data center yet with a capacity of at least 100 megawatts (MW), as it aims to position the Philippines as the next hyperscaler hub in Asia. The company’s ICT subsidiary, ePLDT, has been allocating funds for digital infrastructure to meet the increasing data requirements of users relying on online platforms. With this project, PLDT hopes to increase its current 65% data center market share. The planned facility will be only 24 MW short of the $1 billion hub being built by the Ayala Group in Quezon City. Details about the timeline, investment, and location have not yet been disclosed.

A data center with a capacity of 100 MW can house thousands of servers and IT hardware, and it serves as a facility for storing critical applications and data. Victor Genuino, the President and CEO of ePLDT, stated that their goal is to help the Philippines become the next hyperscaler hub in Asia, while also supporting the digital transformation of various sectors. Hyperscalers are entities that provide cloud, networking, and internet services, such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google GCP.

PLDT is currently in the process of constructing its 11th data center, VITRO Sta. Rosa, which is expected to go live early next year. The completion of the 11th and 12th data centers will bring ePLDT’s capacity to 200 MW. According to Santos Knight Frank, the country currently has a data center capacity of 94 MW. A report by S&P Global Market Intelligence predicts a 13% compounded annual growth rate for the country’s data center industry up to 2025.
