Growth of GM Auto Service Technician Training Program

“We have a long-standing relationship with dealers who generously sponsor students year after year, as they understand the importance of creating a continuous talent pool,” he remarked.

At Ed Rinke Chevrolet-Buick-GMC, we welcome two students into our Automotive Service Educational Program annually,” shared Tyler Wegner, a dedicated service manager at our esteemed dealership in Center Line, Mich. Presently, we have a second-year student working with us, and we are excited to welcome another aspiring technician in August.

Wegner himself was a beneficiary of this program, initially starting as an oil change specialist and subsequently earning his promotion to service manager after successfully completing his bachelor’s degree in automotive management.

Technician shortage is a challenge our dealership faces, especially when it comes to specialized heavy-vehicle engine and transmission work.

Cote, an enthusiatic technician who has successfully graduated from the program, credits the Automotive Service Educational Program for opening up numerous career possibilities for him.

His dedication to personal growth goes beyond the program, as he has pursued additional GM training and acquired certifications as a GM world-class technician and EV specialist. This extensive training has not only enhanced his skill set, but also exposed him to various long-term career prospects in the automotive service industry.

When asked about the impact of the program on his career trajectory, Cote confidently expressed, “Without the comprehensive knowledge and foundation in vehicle systems gained through GM’s Automotive Service Educational Program, I would be many years behind in my career. This program has accelerated my progress in this field and offered me a fulfilling career path.”
