In the face of numerous cancellations leading to widespread speculation that the E3 games conference may be permanently discontinued, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the traditional organizer of the event, disagrees. According to the association, nothing is set in stone, and there is still hope for the future of E3. However, the recent notes from a Los Angeles City Tourism Board paint a different picture, revealing convention cancellations for both E3 2024 and 2025, although it does not explicitly state that the entire expo has been canceled.
When asked about the cancellations, an ESA spokesperson stated, “ESA is currently discussing the future of E3 for 2024 and beyond, and no final decisions have been made at this time.”
Once a prominent event in the gaming industry, E3 was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was canceled again in 2022, and hopes for E3 2023 were dashed when it was also canceled last March. Some have attributed the decline of E3 to other gaming showcases, such as Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest, who squarely places the blame for E3’s “death” on the ESA. In addition, industry giants like Sony and Microsoft have followed Nintendo’s lead by creating their own exclusive showcases, similar to the Nintendo Direct, which debuted in 2011.
The future of E3 still appears uncertain, although the ESA’s statements indicate that the showcase may not be permanently gone. Only time will tell if this once-popular gaming event will make a comeback. The canceled events were originally scheduled for June 11, 2024, and June 3, 2025, respectively.
