Cancellation of Prodigy’s Second Season Confirmed, Paramount+ to Remove the Show

Paramount+ has made the decision to cancel the highly anticipated second season of Star Trek: Prodigy and will be removing the animated series from its platform. Confirmation of this news was obtained by IGN through a spokesperson from Paramount+ who also revealed that other shows, including Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Queen of the Universe, and The Game, have also been axed in preparation for the introduction of Showtime content.

When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, a representative from Paramount explained, “As we prepare to combine Paramount+ and Showtime later this month in the U.S., we are refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers. This is consistent with our content strategy since launch and across our business, which ensures we make smart, efficient choices, informed by audience data and insights. We are removing select programming as we look to optimize Showtime’s robust slate of premium originals.”

The cancellation of Star Trek: Prodigy’s second season is disappointing news for fans who were eagerly awaiting its return. The series marked the comeback of Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway, a character beloved by fans since her last appearance in Star Trek: Voyager. In Star Trek: Prodigy, Janeway appears as a training hologram for the new cast.

Our own Tara Bennett provided a positive perspective on the show after its premiere, describing it as a “lively, kid-friendly space adventure.”

This decision to remove under-performing series follows a trend seen in other streaming platforms, such as Max and Disney+, which have also removed shows for tax purposes in the past year.

Star Trek: Prodigy debuted its first ten episodes on Paramount+ in October 2021, and concluded the season with a second batch of ten episodes airing from October to December 2022.

Starting next Tuesday, Paramount+ will begin integrating Showtime content onto its platform. On the same day, Star Trek: Prodigy, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, and other canceled shows will be removed from the streamer.
