Exploring the possibility of a return to Hall H for SDCC 2023 if a SAG-AFTRA/AMPTP tentative agreement is reached this week.

If you’ve been following the developments of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), you’re aware that the annual geek extravaganza has been heavily impacted by the ongoing WGA/AMPTP writers’ strike and the looming SAG-AFTRA strike deadline. This has led major studios and streaming platforms, including Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, HBO, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, and Netflix, to cancel their Hall H presentations. However, the situation might change considerably by the upcoming weekend, based on recent developments in negotiations between the DGA, SAG-AFTRA, and AMPTP.

As of now, the DGA has successfully ratified its agreement with the AMPTP, securing a new three-year contract with extensive benefits for its members. With the WGA still without a deal and negotiations at a standstill, the focus now shifts to SAG-AFTRA. If SAG-AFTRA can reach a tentative agreement with the AMPTP by the deadline, it could leave the WGA as the sole union without a deal. This opens up the possibility of a revived Hall H schedule for SDCC, with enough time for Comic-Con International to organize presentations featuring famous faces from the industry. The outcome remains uncertain, so SDCC attendees should stay tuned for updates.

WGA, DGA & SAG-AFTRA/AMPTP Weekend Update

DGA/AMPTP Deal Ratified: The DGA has officially ratified its three-year deal with the AMPTP, with a significant majority of members voting in favor of the agreement. The new contract, effective from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2026, brings substantial advancements in wages, global streaming residuals, safety measures, diversity initiatives, and creative rights for DGA members. Additionally, the deal includes provisions for non-dramatic programs made for SVOD and high-budget dramatic programs made for AVOD, establishing minimum terms and conditions. It also reaffirms that generative AI cannot replace the responsibilities of union members.

SAG-AFTRA/AMPTP Negotiations: In a positive video update, SAG-AFTRA National President Fran Drescher and National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland spoke about ongoing negotiations. While the details remain confidential, the team expresses optimism and emphasizes that the negotiations address the significant issues raised by SAG-AFTRA members. Both sides have until June 30th to finalize a deal, and SAG-AFTRA may choose to suspend the strike call if negotiations prove fruitful before the deadline.
