Transforming the Old Republic into the New Dev

Star Wars: The Old Republic Finds a New Developer

In the vast landscape of MMORPGs, Star Wars: The Old Republic may not be the most talked-about game, but it has silently built a dedicated fanbase over the past decade. However, all good things must come to an end, and it appears that BioWare is ready to pass the torch to a new developer. That developer is none other than Broadsword Online Games, the company known for maintaining the even older MMORPG, Ultima Online. This signals a new era of maintenance for SWTOR. Let’s hear what BioWare general manager Gary McKay has to say about this transition…

“Although EA will continue to publish SWTOR, the game’s development will now be handled by our trusted partner, Broadsword, a boutique studio renowned for their expertise in managing online games. The talented teams at Broadsword and SWTOR will join forces to tirelessly support “every player, every day,” ensuring the longevity and growth of these virtual worlds and communities. Rob Denton, Founder and President of Broadsword, brings valuable experience to the table, as he previously played a key role in the development and launch of SWTOR during his time at EA.”

Current plans for SWTOR remain unchanged, and fans have much to look forward to, including exciting undisclosed features and ongoing improvements. However, as with any major change, challenges arise. While most of the current team will make the transition to Broadsword, unfortunately, not every role will be carried over. These difficult decisions were made with careful consideration, and affected team members will receive support as they explore new opportunities within EA.

While some Star Wars: The Old Republic players may feel concerned about this transition, others will be pleased to know that BioWare will now focus on creating “immersive, emotionally charged, single-player games” at their Edmonton and Austin studios. Speaking of which, BioWare is diligently working on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, fine-tuning it to perfection and promises to share more details soon. As for the highly anticipated new Mass Effect game, it is still in the early stages of production, so fans will have to exercise patience.

Both Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and the next Mass Effect installment are planned for release on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5, but specific launch dates have yet to be confirmed.
