Improved PH Agriculture Foreseen by Go Negosyo

MANILA – The advocacy arm of the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE) is optimistic about the future of the agriculture sector, drawing inspiration from its strong performance in the first quarter and the potential implementation of key policy recommendations under the Marcos administration.

Go Negosyo founder Joey Concepcion, on Tuesday, highlighted that the agriculture sector grew by 2.2 percent in the first quarter of 2023, contributing 9.1 percent to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

“This is great news. Once the private sector’s recommendations are considered, agriculture will make an even larger contribution to the country’s GDP,” he stated.

Concepcion’s organization, which supports local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), included these recommendations in the private sector-led initiative called Kapatid Angat Lahat sa Agri Program (Kalap).

The recommendations focus on intensifying farm clustering, restructuring agriculture credit facilities to support inclusive business models, and promoting farm management information systems in commodity industries.

The goal of Kalap is to integrate small farmers into the value chain of large agricultural companies, thereby enhancing the productivity, profitability, sustainability, and global competitiveness of the local sector.

Concepcion also expressed support for key appointments in the sector, indicating increased confidence in the concerned government agencies, including the National Irrigation Administration head Eddie Guillen, Agriculture Undersecretary Leocadio Sebastian, and Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III.
