Experience New Safari 17 with a Preview Option on macOS Sonoma

Apple has released Safari Technology Preview 173, allowing more people to experience Safari 17 before its official launch on macOS Sonoma. Instead of having to install the Sonoma beta, Ventura users can now try out the revamped Safari and discover its new features and improvements.

However, there are some limitations to Safari 17 on Ventura. Since it excludes certain impactful changes, the preview mainly focuses on developer tools. Live Text support has been introduced to enable the recognition of vertical text in images and videos. The Responsive Design Mode has also been refined to enhance webpage responsiveness. Additionally, the new Feature Flags section provides easier access to Apple’s experimental features.

Note that Safari 17 on Ventura may not be the latest build of the updated browser, which is why users on that system won’t be able to enjoy all the new features. To access all the bells and whistles, you’ll need to install the Sonoma beta on your Mac and then upgrade to the 173 preview build of Safari.

Exclusive to the Sonoma beta

Upon installing the build, users will gain access to four new features, three of which were originally introduced during WWDC 2023. Profiles have been added to Safari, allowing users to share their Mac computers while maintaining privacy. Private Browsing on Sonoma now locks windows when not in use and provides protection against advanced tracking techniques. Additionally, websites can now be added to the Mac Dock for immediate access. The only new addition is a redesigned text cursor that matches the system’s accent color.

The rest of the 173 preview build includes developer tools and bug fixes, such as support for the JPEG XL image and HEIC file formats and addressing the issue of videos turning black when exiting picture-in-picture mode. While there is no information on when the enhanced search function or passkey sharing will arrive in Safari or the Sonoma beta, it is worth noting that these additions are not major.

Availability

If you’re interested in trying out Safari 17, you can visit Apple’s Developer website and download the browser that is compatible with your macOS version. The installation process will be guided by your computer. The best part is that anyone can try it out, regardless of whether you’re a developer or not, although developers are likely to benefit the most from this build.

According to 9to5Mac, Safari 17 will be its own standalone app and will not replace the main browser. You can uninstall it whenever you want. Additionally, keep in mind that this is a preview build, and the final product may have a different appearance.
