Upcoming Video Game Releases – July 2023

Tracking the release of new video games can be quite a daunting task, given the numerous platforms and storefronts available today. But fear not, as I am here to assist you. Each month, I will provide you with a comprehensive list of games worth keeping an eye on – from major titles to hidden gems. Although we are entering the slower summer months, there are still a few notable releases in July, such as Pikmin 4 and Exoprimal. In addition, the indie scene is booming with exciting releases like Oxenfree II, Unholy, and Viewfinder. However, please note that while I may have played demos or had early access to some of the recommended games, my recommendations are based on their potential, and I advise waiting for reviews before purchasing. Without further ado, let’s dive into the games to watch for in July.

The Headliners
Exoprimal (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 & PS5, July 14)
Capcom, known for their fantastic games, surprises us with Exoprimal, a co-op shooter that pits players against hordes of dinosaurs. With hundreds of raptors and massive mutant T. rexes, this game promises a unique experience. While it’s uncertain if Exoprimal will become the next big live-service success, Capcom deserves credit for trying something new and unconventional.

Jagged Alliance 3 (PC, July 14)
The Jagged Alliance series returns with Jagged Alliance 3, offering classic turn-based tactical strategy gameplay. Despite the series’ recent ups and downs, there’s reason to be optimistic about this installment. Developed by Haemimont Games, known for their successful Tropico series and Surviving Mars, Jagged Alliance 3 promises a good old-school experience with more depth than ever before.

Pikmin 4 (Switch, July 21)
After a long wait, Pikmin 4 is finally arriving in July. This highly anticipated game expands on the series’ formula, introducing returning caves, nighttime missions, and the adorable alien dog Oatchi. With my full hands-on impressions available and a substantial demo of the game, Pikmin 4 is definitely worth considering.

The Expanse: A Telltale Series (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 & PS5, July 27)
Telltale Games, although bankrupt in the past, has been revived and presents The Expanse: A Telltale Series as its first release. Based on the beloved sci-fi TV show, this episodic game will release episodes every two weeks, promising a new chapter of drama along with improved quality under the co-development of Deck Nine. Fans of Telltale’s storytelling and The Expanse will not want to miss this one.

Promising Indies
Oxenfree II: Lost Signals (PC, PS4, PS5 & Switch, July 12)
Night School Studio, the developer behind the memorable Oxenfree, returns with Oxenfree II: Lost Signals. Set five years after the first game, this sequel appears to have a darker and more ominous tone. Moving away from casual teenage conversations, Oxenfree II dives straight into the freaky and mysterious. Prepare for another haunting adventure.

Viewfinder (PC & PS5, July 18)
Viewfinder introduces a mind-bending concept that showcases the versatility of the video game medium. With a magic camera, players can take pictures that come to life and influence the world around them. Manipulating these pictures opens new paths forward, creating a unique and clever gameplay experience. Watch the trailer for a taste of its brilliance.

Unholy (PC, Xbox Series X/S & PS5, July 20)
Unholy blurs the line between AAA and indie horror games. Developed by Duality Games, this visually stunning indie title transports players to a post-Soviet Eastern European town and a dark nether realm. Immerse yourself in this unique and terrifying world, as Unholy promises to deliver a top-tier horror experience.

Venba (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 & Switch, July 31)
While cooking games abound, Venba differentiates itself by focusing on a Canadian first-generation Indian family. As you create traditional South Indian dishes, the game also explores the challenges faced by immigrant families. With its emphasis on heartwarming storytelling and cooking gameplay, Venba offers a refreshing and authentic experience.
