The 2023 seasons of Destiny 2 have formed a more direct connection with the current expansion, Lightfall. While previous seasons were tied to past and upcoming expansions, they also offered separate adventures with unique themes and modes. In contrast, Season of Defiance and Season of the Deep serve as an epilogue to Lightfall, expanding on the story of that expansion. This addresses one of the main criticisms fans had when it initially launched in February.
In an interview with Bungie’s narrative, design, and creative leads, they discussed how the next two seasons of Destiny 2 will lay the foundation for the game’s upcoming expansion, The Final Shape. Although Season 22 has not been unveiled yet, senior narrative designer Robert Brookes explained that “these are some of the most serialized and interconnected seasons we’ve ever done.”
Brookes added, “The interconnection between annual releases and seasons is like a chain link, and this year is different. Normally, we build up to an expansion and then introduce new content with subsequent seasons. However, this time there are unresolved narrative threads that we deliberately left to explore and expand upon. Moving forward from Season 22 and Season 23, we will build up to The Final Shape. It’s a departure from what we’re used to.”
In the post-Lightfall seasons, Bungie has been experimenting with new narrative systems to tell diverse stories and shake up the structure of Destiny 2, keeping players surprised. Season of Defiance explored the Shadow Legion’s invasion of Earth and the repercussions of war, while Season of the Deep revealed important details about the origins of the Witness, the Veil, and a major revelation for the future of Destiny 2.
