Microsoft is set to launch its own app store for the iPhone and iPad in 2024. The European Union’s Digital Markets Act is expected to bring about changes that will allow other developers to introduce their own app stores alongside Apple’s App Store. Microsoft plans to be one of the first to release its own store for Xbox apps and games after the new rules come into effect.
According to a report by the Financial Times, Microsoft’s gaming chief Phil Spencer announced the company’s intention to open its own app store for both iOS and Android. The store is scheduled to go live in March 2024, shortly after Microsoft finalizes its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion.
Microsoft aims to make the Xbox experience and its content accessible across multiple screens, particularly on mobile devices. While this is currently not possible on mobile, the company plans to change that in the near future.
Despite facing antitrust regulators over its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Spencer believes the deal will provide smartphone players with more options, as smartphones are currently the most popular gaming platform.
The Microsoft app store will also benefit the company’s cloud gaming service, which is currently limited on iOS. Android users have a dedicated app, but iPhone users must access it through a web browser. An app store for Microsoft would allow them to list their games individually, thus bypassing Apple’s App Store rules and the associated 30% fee.
