The Last of Us effectively transformed one of the best video game narratives into a prestigious television series. Even the Sonic the Hedgehog movie was popular enough to warrant multiple sequels. Now, Peacock’s original series Twisted Metal, based on the popular PlayStation games, strives to continue this trend.
Sony teased the adaptation in April, but Peacock has now released the official trailer for Twisted Metal. While fans of The Last of Us might recognize the post-apocalyptic setting, this show promises a distinct tone separate from the HBO drama.
I’m reserved in my judgement of this show, but the cast is undeniably impressive. Anthony Mackie takes the lead as John Doe, an outspoken outsider given an opportunity at a better life. However, he must successfully deliver a mysterious package through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Accompanying him is Quiet, portrayed by Stephanie Beatriz, a skilled car thief who assists him in navigating the wasteland. Together, they face terrifying adversaries like the murderous clown Sweet Tooth, played by wrestler Samoa Joe and voiced by Will Arnett. The cast also boasts Thomas Haden Church, Neve Campbell, Mike Mitchell, Richard Cabral, and Lou Beatty Jr.
Not every video game adaptation achieves the level of success seen in The Last of Us, but Twisted Metal’s concept originates from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the talented duo behind Zombieland and the Deadpool film series. Additionally, showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith, previously involved in the acclaimed Cobra Kai, brings his expertise to the table. The show certainly has a strong foundation.
Twisted Metal will premiere on Peacock on July 27.
