Rainn Wilson ponders the potential outcomes if he had left The Office earlier to pursue a career in movies. He also reveals his idea for a revival of the series.

It’s difficult to imagine NBC’s beloved sitcom, The Office, without the iconic character of Dwight Schrute, played by Rainn Wilson. Wilson’s portrayal of the eccentric assistant to the regional manager, alongside Steve Carell as Michael Scott and John Krasinski as Jim Halpert, created some of the most memorable moments in the show. While Wilson and Krasinski, along with their co-stars Jenna Fischer, Leslie David Baker, Brian Baumgartner, and Angela Kinsey, stayed with the show for all 188 episodes, Carell departed in season seven to pursue other opportunities in the film industry. Wilson, however, admits that he also desired a similar path, as he revealed in an interview with Bill Maher on the podcast Club Random.

In his interview, Wilson expressed his discontent during his time on the show, despite its success and acclaim. He found himself questioning why he wasn’t pursuing a movie career and becoming the next Jack Black or Will Ferrell. He explains, “When I was on ‘The Office,’ I was clutching and grasping at, okay, I was making hundreds of thousands. I wanted millions, and I was a TV star, but I wanted to be a movie star. It was never enough.” Wilson’s desire for more is a universal human instinct that has driven our species forward throughout history.

Despite his aspirations for a movie career, Wilson remained committed to the show. In a webisode of The Office: Accountants in 2006, he reprised his role as Dwight. Looking to the future, Wilson even has a revival pitch for the series. He envisions a post-pandemic storyline where Dwight receives a call from corporate to bring back the entire office team. However, each member of the cast would be resistant, and Dwight would have to kidnap them one by one in various odd and inappropriate ways. This concept offers an exciting opportunity to revisit the beloved characters and their dynamics.

Prior to his role in The Office, which debuted in 2005, Wilson appeared in films such as Galaxy Quest (1999), Almost Famous (2000), and Sahara (2005), as well as TV shows like Charmed, CSI, and Dark Angel. The entire series of The Office is currently available for streaming on Peacock.
