Twitter is reportedly censoring links to its latest rival Threads from its search results page. Threads has surpassed generative AI-based chatbot ChatGPT in becoming the fastest app to reach over 100 million downloads.
The issue was brought to light by a Threads user named Andy Baio. Baio noticed that when searching for ‘url:threads.net’, no results were returned, even though it should have displayed all tweets with links to Threads.net websites.
Other Twitter users have shared similar experiences, stating that they were unable to find tweets containing the Threads link.
However, some users have found a workaround for Twitter’s restrictions. To search for posts with Threads links, users can use the phrase “url:Threads net” on the platform.
It is not the first time Twitter has blocked links to a competing app. Earlier this year, they restricted access to tweets with Substack links, preventing users from liking, retweeting, or replying to those tweets. The restriction was justified by Elon Musk, who claimed that Substack was trying to download a large portion of Twitter’s database to gain an advantage over the social media giant.

Threads was launched on July 6, 2023, with the goal of becoming the app for public conversations with 1 billion users. According to web analytics firm Similarweb, Twitter’s web traffic has dropped by 11% since the launch of Threads compared to the same period last year, as reported by Reuters.
