Ubisoft, a French Video Game Company, Explores AI and VR as the Future of Gaming

Ubisoft, the French videogame giant, is setting its sights on artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) as the future of gaming, according to its CEO. With Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset on the horizon, Ubisoft is no stranger to taking risks on gaming innovations. In the past, the company partnered with Nintendo on the popular Wii console in 2006.

Looking ahead to Apple’s Vision Pro headset, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot believes that VR is the next disruptive force in the gaming industry. As free-to-play smartphone games and cloud-based gaming have dominated the past decade, Guillemot sees VR as the next major industry disruptor.

In an interview with AFP at a showcase event in Los Angeles, Guillemot stated, “VR is eventually going to happen.” He also expressed excitement about Apple’s massive investment in the field, which he believes will take the industry to new heights.

With the entry of Apple’s Vision Pro and Facebook’s Meta, which has been driving VR video games with its Quest device, Ubisoft plans to develop games for these platforms. However, Guillemot predicts that widespread adoption will only happen once the $3,500 headsets become more accessible to users.

Expanding horizons

While designing games for new platforms can be challenging, Circana’s executive director of videogames, Mat Piscatella, commends Ubisoft for its diversification strategy. Piscatella believes that by supporting new market entrants, Ubisoft positions itself well for success in case these new products or services take off. Additionally, Ubisoft’s expansion into film and TV streaming content further broadens its entertainment offerings.

Ubisoft is behind the successful AppleTV series “Mythic Quest,” and it recently announced that its animated series “Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix” will premiere on Netflix. Guillemot’s goal is to make Ubisoft’s brands more accessible and globally recognized by partnering with platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime.

During the Los Angeles event, Ubisoft revealed a free-to-play version of its blockbuster game franchise “Assassin’s Creed.” It also announced a VR version of the game compatible with Meta’s Quest gear. Furthermore, Ubisoft teased the development of a video game based on the popular “Avatar” movies and a “Star Wars Outlaws” title created in collaboration with LucasFilm.

AI games

In addition to VR, Guillemot believes that artificial intelligence (AI) will revolutionize the gaming industry. He sees generative AI as a fantastic opportunity, citing the success of Microsoft-backed ChatGPT as an example. Guillemot envisions games becoming more intelligent, replicating real-life experiences through cloud computing and giving each character a unique personality.

Gaming has become a $200 billion industry due to constant innovation, and Guillemot is confident that AI, VR, and cloud technologies will make the industry even more exciting and attractive.
