A Guide to Purchasing the Pixel Fold in Canada

Google’s highly coveted Pixel Fold is unfortunately not available for purchase in Canada through regular channels.

Although the tech giant only officially sells the foldable device in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Japan, a resourceful reader of MobileSyrup managed to acquire the Pixel Fold and shared their experience with me.

It’s important to note that this is not an official method of purchasing the smartphone, and results may vary. Personally, I have not attempted to buy the Pixel Fold using this method yet.

Here’s how the reader managed to buy Google’s Pixel Fold in Canada:

The Purchase Process:

The reader logged into the Google Store using their existing Google account.

They then navigated to the bottom of the page and switched to the U.S. store, where the Pixel Fold became available for pre-order.

The reader added the phone, a case, and the free Pixel Watch to their cart.

It’s worth noting that these items will transfer to your Canadian account and appear in your previously purchased items.

To address the issue of requiring a U.S. address for shipping, the reader visited shippsy.com. This service provided them with a U.S. address in Sanborn, New York. Unlike some PO boxes, this business receives items and signs for them. Once the items arrive at the facility, you need to send several documents, including the receipt and the price of the items. However, customs fees can be expensive. Shippsy charges a $6.99 fee, and the reader had to pay $33.78 in duties and $334.33 in HST (VAT) as well.

Overall, using Shippsy adds approximately one week to the order processing time.

When it came to payment, the system initially accepted the reader’s card through Google Pay, but then required a ZIP code and rejected the Canadian card. To solve this issue, the reader obtained a U.S. dollar Mastercard from BMO. They found the process to be quick and painless. Other Canadian banks also offer similar U.S. dollar credit cards. The reader mentions that making payments to pay off the card using their BMO Mastercard was an easy process.

The bank recommends using the numbers from your postal code and adding zeros, but this did not work for the reader. Instead, they used the famous ZIP code ‘90210,’ which was accepted.

After completing the payment process, the reader received the Pixel Fold. So far, they have not experienced any signal-related issues with the foldable device while using Telus as their carrier. However, they note that the Pixel Watch only works on Wi-Fi as Telus does not support the U.S. IMEI code.

And that’s the entire process!

Special thanks to the MobileSyrup reader who wished to remain anonymous. We greatly appreciate your updates and insight throughout the process.
