The Avengers: 4 Questions Unveiled by the Secret Invasion

A few weeks ago, I expressed my belief that Secret Invasion effectively resolves a lingering plot hole in the Avengers storyline following Endgame. Secret Invasion, a Disney Plus series, seamlessly integrates the Avengers into its narrative while staying true to the story. Despite knowing that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is just a phone call away, he chooses not to ask for their help, and for valid reasons. He fears that the Skrulls could infiltrate the Avengers, and moreover, having additional Avengers cameos would be financially burdensome for Marvel.

Since my initial assessment after the second episode, Secret Invasion has made significant progress. However, the show isn’t showing signs of improvement. The more I ponder, the more I encounter perplexing Avengers-related issues that lack clear explanations. Spoilers ahead.

One might question why the Avengers are absent from the conflict. While the Avengers, as a group, no longer exist in the MCU, the individual superheroes are still present and could intervene. Personally, I did not anticipate their involvement in assisting Fury, particularly after watching the initial episodes. It is reasonable for Fury to worry that the Skrulls could overpower and replace certain members of the Avengers in a confrontation. Nevertheless, the Skrulls are making preparations for an impending clash. They are transforming themselves into Super Skrulls, fully aware of the inevitable clash with the Avengers.

Let’s not forget that the Avengers could autonomously take action without notifying anyone. The Sokovia Accords are a thing of the past, and Fury has been absent. However, the Avengers previously monitored events on Earth between Infinity War and Endgame. Though Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) were primarily responsible for coordination, they remained united as a group and diligently observed ongoing developments. Have the surviving heroes stopped paying attention to the issues plaguing the world?

Wouldn’t it be natural for the Avengers to react upon hearing rumors about Nick Fury’s involvement in the Russia bombings and his potential role in Maria Hill’s death? Instead of treating the audience as if we cannot connect the dots, Marvel could have provided an alternative scene. It could have depicted Rhodes calling Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), informing him that he is handling the situation and advising against coming to Europe. He could have assured Sam that he is equipped with the necessary resources. Essentially, offering some indication that certain Avengers would respond swiftly to any detected threat.

Marvel wants us to perceive Secret Invasion as a grand global event, necessitating increased attention from the Avengers. So, why didn’t Fury adequately prepare the Avengers for a potential Skrull invasion? While it is understandable for Fury to fear that Skrulls might replace his remaining Avenger allies, it is highly irresponsible to be ill-prepared for a conflict that may involve the Avengers. Fury should have implemented countermeasures enabling him to coordinate an Avengers’ response to a Skrull invasion. His failure to do so is particularly troubling, especially considering the infiltration of HYDRA within S.H.I.E.L.D. Perhaps Fury is not the most suitable person to lead S.H.I.E.L.D., the Avengers, or independently combat the Skrulls. I am not advocating for the actual appearance of any Avengers; however, Fury’s calls to Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) would have conveyed the sense that he had devised a contingency plan. While Hawkeye cannot be fully trusted as he may be a Skrull, it is possible to employ spycraft to address the issue.

Furthermore, it would have been prudent for Fury to consult with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) or Wong (Benedict Wong), who possess the ability to provide immediate assistance through portal travel. Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) could have informed Fury, during his experience on Earth spanning thirty years, that Skrulls cannot replicate the actual powers possessed by Hulk, Strange, and Wong. This knowledge would have allowed Fury to determine which Avengers could be trusted. Although the Skrull spying program may be a secret Fury kept to himself for valid reasons, he must have informed others about the presence of covertly living aliens on Earth. How else could one replace Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) in Spider-Man: Far From Home? Unless Fury managed to accomplish that without informing Maria Hill about his actions. Additionally, the Avengers are well aware of the existence of shape-shifting aliens in the universe since Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) invasion of Earth.

Lastly, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) also shares responsibility for the escalating unhappiness among the Skrulls. At the very least, Fury could have contacted Danvers again. While the use of the pager should not be abused, it would have been another method for Marvel to convey the importance of the human race potentially hanging in the balance.

Why aren’t there more Skrull-Avengers? Don Cheadle’s captivating performance in Secret Invasion and his memorable dialogues with Fury make it all the more intriguing when his true identity as a Skrull is revealed. However, it is rather frustrating that Marvel hasn’t hinted at the possibility of other Avengers being Skrulls. Again, actual cameos are not necessary. Skrull-Rhodes could have been seen conversing with mysterious Skrull-Avengers, informing them about his plan to deal with Fury once and for all. He could have mentioned that he doesn’t require their assistance but suggests that they pretend to be occupied with saving a different part of the Earth, thereby providing a valid excuse for their absence. This could also explain why they would not answer Fury’s call should he change his mind about seeking backup.

Why aren’t people calling for the Avengers’ help? Given the Avengers’ popularity, it is unnecessary for Fury to assemble the active heroes. The world itself can do it. Leaders of nations that have been covertly attacked by Skrulls might question aloud why the Avengers are not offering their assistance now that they are free from the constraints of the Sokovia Accords. While many top officials may be Skrulls, not all of them are. Furthermore, the power of social media allows anyone, not just high-ranking politicians, to raise awareness about regions in distress.

In conclusion, Secret Invasion falls short of being the earth-shattering event that Marvel marketed it to be. The stakes do not feel sufficiently high, and the storyline lacks extensive references to the Avengers. Envision creating Captain America: Civil War with only Steve Rogers and Tony Stark debating freedom in a confined room. With only two episodes remaining, my hopes for the TV show have dwindled. However, Secret Invasion might serve as a precursor to an exceptional Armor Wars story.
