For now, Netflix embraces ‘sports-related’ streaming instead of live sports coverage

In the realm of streaming live sports, it seems like Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has a different approach. During the company’s second quarter earnings call, Sarandos revealed that Netflix intends to prioritize offering a robust selection for sports fans without delving into the complexities of live sports licensing, stating, “We really think that we can have a really strong offering for sports fans on Netflix without having to be part of the difficulty of the economic model of live sports licensing.” He further explained that Netflix is excited about the success of their sports-adjacent programming, such as shows like “Quarterback” and “Tour de France: Unchained,” which have been successful in introducing new audiences to sports through exceptional storytelling, rather than relying on the live aspect of the games.

According to Sarandos, this strategy allows Netflix to provide a wide range of sports programming that caters to sports fans throughout the year, leveraging the company’s strengths in storytelling. By focusing on exceptional storytelling, Netflix aims to offer a unique and engaging experience for viewers interested in sports content.

(Disclosure: Vox Media Studios produced Full Swing, and The Verge recently produced a series with Netflix.)
