TL;DR

  • Google will begin enabling its Privacy Sandbox APIs in Chrome 115 in the next few days.
  • Initially, the APIs will be enabled on 35% of browsers and gradually increased.
  • Google aims for 99% availability by mid-August.

Chrome 115 started rolling out this week, bringing a new feature to address tracking cookies.

In a blog post, Google announced the upcoming enablement of Privacy Sandbox APIs. The APIs will be gradually rolled out to users with Chrome 115.

Despite its usual approach, Google developed the Privacy Sandbox in 2019 to eliminate browser cookies. The feature aims to limit the personal data accessible to advertisers without completely preventing audience targeting. The rollout process for Privacy Sandbox begins in late July 2023, as announced by Google in May 2023.

Privacy Sandbox will be enabled for 35% of Chrome 115 users initially, with a gradual increase to 60% by the start of August. Google targets 99% availability by mid-August, with the Privacy Sandbox Relevance and Measurement origin trial ending on September 20, 2023.

Your Chrome browser should automatically update to Chrome 115. If you want to enroll in the Privacy Sandbox, Google recommends completing the enrollment and attestation process for accessing the relevance and measurement APIs. Google also provides developer overrides for local testing in Chrome 116.

To access the Privacy Sandbox relevance and measurement APIs on Chrome and Android, developers will need to complete the enrollment and attestation process. This will soon become a mandatory requirement for accessing the APIs, so we recommend you start the process as soon as possible.

For local testing, we are providing developer overrides from Chrome 116 with a Chrome flag and CLI switch:

Flag: chrome://flags/#privacy-sandbox-enrollment-overrides
CLI: –privacy-sandbox-enrollment-overrides=https://example.com,https://example.co.uk,…

If you enroll before the trial period ends, the transition should be seamless. Google plans to fully phase out third-party cookies by Q3 2024.
