Announced on Thursday morning, Adult Swim revealed that a new anime series called Lazarus is now in production. The series is being created by renowned director Shinichirō Watanabe, known for his work on Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. The production is being handled by MAPPA, the same anime studio behind popular shows like Attack on Titan, Jujustu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man.
Furthermore, Adult Swim shared that Chad Stahelski, the director and stuntman behind all four John Wick movies, has designed the action sequences for the show. The score for Lazarus will feature jazz and electronic music from renowned musicians Kamasi Washington, Floating Points, and Bonobo. Together, this talented group forms a true “dream team”.
Although Adult Swim did not release any images or videos from the series, here’s a brief synopsis:
The year is 2052, and the world enjoys an unprecedented era of peace and prosperity. This is due to the invention of Hapuna, a miracle drug created by Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner. Hapuna eliminates all sickness and pain without any apparent drawbacks. However, after its official introduction, Dr. Skinner mysteriously disappears. Three years later, he returns with a grim revelation – Hapuna has a short half-life, and everyone who has taken it will die in approximately three years. As a response, a special task force of five agents, known as “Lazarus,” is formed to save humanity from Skinner’s plan. Can they find Skinner and develop a vaccine before time runs out?
With MAPPA’s recent success, even without the talented crew involved, Lazarus would still be worth watching. Unfortunately, Adult Swim did not provide any information about release plans, but more details should be revealed soon.
Shinichirō Watanabe will be attending the Adult Swim Festival during San Diego Comic-Con for the “Toonami on the Green” event on Saturday, July 22, at 5:15 p.m. PT. The event will feature a first-look at Lazarus and other upcoming Toonami original series.
Once the series begins airing, it will also be available on Max.
