Discover the Art of Stylish Cave Exploration in Pikmin 4

Pikmin is a unique and challenging series that combines strategy, time management, and exploration. The upcoming Pikmin 4 game introduces caves as a new level of difficulty. Caves have their own set of rules, with no time limits and the inability to spawn Pikmin. Navigating through caves can be intimidating, but we have some helpful tips for those brave enough to explore the darkness. Here are some spelunking pointers…

Pay attention to recommended Pikmin types, but don’t be too rigid

Prior to entering a cave, the game will suggest three types of Pikmin to accompany you. These recommendations are worth considering, especially if the game suggests elemental Pikmin. However, it’s important to follow your own preferences. For example, the game often recommended Flying Pikmin, but if you don’t enjoy using them, it’s best to choose the Pikmin you’re comfortable with.

Consult your map

Every time you descend to a new sublevel, take the time to examine your map. While not all details may be filled in, the overall layout provides valuable clues about the sublevel’s nature and objectives.

Keep your forces together

In regular surface maps, dividing your forces can be advantageous for time efficiency. However, in caves, time is not a constraint and sublevels are usually smaller and less complex. It’s best to stick together to minimize Pikmin loss, as caves often have more enemies and traps. There may be instances where you need to divide your squad to solve puzzles, but it’s safer to stay united when first entering a sublevel.

Don’t hesitate to retreat and resupply

Although caves may seem daunting, Pikmin 4 is not a hardcore dungeon hack or roguelike. You can exit a cave at any time and return later to any previously reached sublevel. If you need more Pikmin, want to change your squad composition, or prepare for a challenging battle, feel free to retreat from the cave. You can reenter with a fresh squad and additional items.

Beware of treacherous edges

Some caves require exploration of floating surfaces and platforms over a bottomless void. If your Pikmin fall over the edge, they will be lost. This was a common cause of Pikmin casualties during my cave exploration. Be cautious when throwing your Pikmin and be mindful of enemy attacks that can launch you and your squad. Ensure you have ample space and avoid standing with your back towards the edge.

Use the time rewind feature to fix mistakes

Sometimes, mistakes happen. You might accidentally throw blue Pikmin at a fire enemy, causing them to get roasted, or a portion of your squad may fall off an edge. Luckily, Pikmin 4 offers a time rewind feature that allows you to undo any errors. This feature is particularly useful in caves, as the game usually saves a time-rewind checkpoint when entering a new sublevel. It may feel like cheating, but rest assured, your secret is safe.

And there you have it! These tips should help you navigate the underground without getting lost.
