Swedish developer Frictional Games, renowned for their successful Penumbra and Amnesia series, has announced its plans to dial down the horror elements in their upcoming games.
In a recent interview, creative director Thomas Grip emphasized that the emotional investment of players is the primary focus for Frictional Games, rather than pure fear (source: 80lv). Grip stated, “While all of our games have had elements of horror, our true aim is to achieve a ‘playable immersion’.”
Highlighting the themes of motherhood in Amnesia: Rebirth and the philosophical questions surrounding humanity in SOMA, Grip praised the team’s ability to balance these complex subjects with creating an enjoyable and terrifying gaming experience.
He stated, “While horror has been the backdrop for our stories, these themes could be conveyed through other genres. In future projects, our intention is to scale back on the horror elements and place greater emphasis on other emotional aspects.”
Grip added, “I’m confident that these games will still embody the essence of Frictional. The immersive gameplay, personal journey, and holistic vision define what we consider to be the distinguishing features of a Frictional game—not just horror.”
Frictional Games recently released Amnesia: The Bunker, which is set in World War 1. Players take on the role of Henri Clément, a soldier trapped with a monster that responds to the choices they make as they attempt to evade death. The studio’s upcoming title is rumored to be a “bigger” sci-fi horror game that delves into the “philosophical realm similar to SOMA.”
