Confirmed by WB Games: Hogwarts Legacy Sells Impressive 12 Million Copies Globally

Hogwarts Legacy, the highly anticipated open-world Harry Potter game, has achieved record-breaking success. WB Games has confirmed that the game has sold 12 million copies within just two weeks, generating an impressive $850 million (about Rs. 7,026 crore) in global sales across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. This remarkable achievement marks the biggest game launch for the company. The impact of Hogwarts Legacy on the Harry Potter franchise as a whole is nothing short of surreal.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company, has reported a significant increase in fan engagement on Wizarding World Digital (the Harry Potter website). The platform has seen a staggering 300 percent increase in unique visitor traffic in the first 10 days of February, compared to the normal average.

David Haddad, the president of WB Games, revealed to Variety that players have already spent 280 million hours immersed in the world of Hogwarts Legacy. This impressive figure only includes gameplay from the launch period through February 22, excluding the 72-hour early access period granted to Deluxe Edition pre-orders. The early access period gave the game a substantial boost, propelling it to the top of Twitch charts with a peak concurrent viewership of 1.28 million. Hogwarts Legacy now holds the coveted title of being the number one single-player game on the platform, surpassing the previously set records by Cyberpunk 2077. While some credit can be given to item drops and streamer drama surrounding the boycott of author J.K. Rowling, it remains an extraordinary achievement. The report also revealed other impressive player accomplishments, such as growing 393 million magical plants, defeating 1.25 billion Dark Wizards, and brewing 242 million potions.

Haddad expressed his satisfaction with the development team at Avalanche, who delivered an exceptional Wizarding World experience that fully embraces the fan fantasy of life at Hogwarts. The publishing teams also executed a globally impactful launch campaign. In comparison, Cyberpunk 2077 sold over 13 million copies in its first three weeks, while it took FromSoftware’s highly acclaimed game Elden Ring 18 days to sell over 12 million units. Elden Ring has recently crossed the 20 million mark, almost a year after its release.

Hogwarts Legacy stands in a formidable position, with its sales expected to soar even higher when the game releases on the previous-generation PS4 and Xbox One in April, followed by a Nintendo Switch version in July. Unlike Cyberpunk 2077, players have reported minimal game-breaking bugs or performance issues with Hogwarts Legacy, eliminating the need for refund requests. On Steam, the game reached an all-time peak of 879,308 concurrent players, falling short of the 1,054,388 peak concurrent players achieved by CD Projekt Red’s open-world title.

A recent report suggests that an HBO Max series based on Hogwarts Legacy is in the early stages of development. Although this information should be taken with caution, Warner Bros. considers the game a “long-term” franchise. Set in the 1800s, Hogwarts Legacy takes players on a whimsical journey as a fifth-year student with a unique talent for ancient magic. Explore the iconic magic-filled castle, the Forbidden Forest, and engage in battles against Dark Wizards while mastering spells, herbology, potions, and more.

Hogwarts Legacy is currently available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The previous-generation versions for PS4 and Xbox One will be released on April 4, and the Nintendo Switch version will follow on July 25.
