Bird Flu Vaccines from 4 Manufacturers Undergo PH Testing

The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) is currently conducting tests on avian influenza (AI) vaccines produced by four international pharmaceutical companies. This is in preparation for a vaccination campaign against AI.

The BAI has not revealed the names of the vaccine manufacturers, but they have confirmed that the companies are from Europe, South America, and the United States.

BAI director Paul Limson stated that the guidelines for AI vaccination are currently being developed. The companies have already presented the results of their field trials.

However, the local guidelines require the candidate vaccines to undergo a field trial to ensure their safety and effectiveness before they can be administered.

Limson emphasized the importance of testing the vaccines strategically to determine their effectiveness in the long run. Once the vaccines are assessed, they will be endorsed to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the issuance of import permits.

Further discussions will be held with industry stakeholders and the Philippine College of Poultry Practitioners to gather their input on the proposed rules on AI vaccination.

Limson also assured that the government will have an easier time procuring the vaccines if the need arises.

In a separate development, the second field trial for the African swine fever (ASF) vaccine is currently ongoing and is expected to be completed by September of this year.

Limson added that the FDA is likely waiting for the completion of the field trial before taking any action regarding the ASF vaccine. The BAI has endorsed the VAC ASF Live Vaccine manufactured in Vietnam to the FDA, as clinical tests on six farms in Luzon showed no side effects.

The estimated cost of the ASF vaccine is around P600 per dose.

As of July 14, the provinces of Pampanga and Kalinga still have active cases of bird flu, according to data from the BAI. Meanwhile, provinces such as Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Bataan, Tarlac, Zambales, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Negros Occidental, Cebu, Sultan Kudarat, Agusan del Norte, and Surigao del Sur have active cases of ASF as of June 29.
