In a move to reduce imports from countries like China, the government has implemented immediate restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra small form factor computers, and servers. According to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, import licensing exemptions are granted for up to 20 items per consignment for purposes such as R&D, testing, benchmarking, evaluation, repair and return, and product development. However, products under restrictions will require a license or permission from the government. This includes micro computers, large or mainframe computers, and certain data processing machines. Imports under baggage rules are exempt from these restrictions.

The notification also states that imports of one laptop, tablet, all-in-one personal computer, or ultra small form factor computer, including those purchased from e-commerce portals or shipped through post or courier, will be allowed with the payment of applicable duty. Exceptions will be made for these goods as they are considered essential for capital goods.
