Nitin Desai criticised a financial services firm in a voice note he left behind: Police

Bollywood art director Nitin Desai tragically ended his life, leaving behind a voice note expressing his frustrations with a financial services company and his company’s financial crisis. Desai also mentioned four individuals in his note and made a final plea to the government to take over his studio.

The police are currently investigating the matter. According to the police, the voice note discovered after Desai’s supposed suicide revealed his dissatisfaction with a financial services company and his company’s debt. He also mentioned feeling overwhelmed and unable to continue.

During their investigation into the suicide, the Raigad police in Maharashtra discovered 11 audio recordings on a voice recorder found in Desai’s office. One of the recordings features Desai expressing his company’s inability to recover from the financial crisis due to the methods used by the financial services firm. The recordings, ranging from four to twenty minutes in length, also included Desai sharing details of his life. At the time of his death, Desai was 57 years old.

The police plan to question the financial services firm mentioned in the note. Desai’s company had failed to repay a loan of Rs 252 crore, leading to insolvency proceedings. In 2016 and 2018, ND’s Art World Pvt Ltd, owned by Desai, had taken two loans totaling Rs 185 crore from ECL Finance. Repayment issues began in January 2020.

During a state Assembly session, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced an investigation into the private lending firm that provided a loan to Desai. The aim is to determine if Desai was charged high interest and if he was under mental stress. The voice notes also referenced four individuals.

In one of the recordings, Desai made a plea to the government to acquire his Karjat studio and turn it into a space for emerging artists. Reports suggest that Desai faced numerous obstacles throughout his life and had reached a point where he could no longer continue. He expressed in an audio recording that his journey had come to an end.
