Keeping the PS5 in Vertically Upright Position Will Not Damage It, Report Clarifies

It has been clarified by news outlet Wololo that keeping your PS5 upright is perfectly safe. Earlier reports suggested that placing the console in a vertical position could cause internal damage by causing the liquid metal to leak onto the motherboard. However, Wololo has now retracted their statement and stated that there is “no evidence” that this will happen to consoles fresh out of the box. This issue primarily affects those who have recently had their PS5s repaired, so caution should be taken in how it is positioned. Fresh PS5s are not at risk when placed vertically.

Wololo explained that their initial report was based on a misunderstanding on their part. They mistakenly believed that the liquid metal problem occurred on untampered, in-box PS5 units. This was not the case, as clarified by The Cod3r, a hardware YouTuber who first highlighted the design flaw. The issue only arises when the console has been opened by repair shops prior to The Cod3r’s examination. If this issue was severe, it would create a negative image for Sony, as they continue to promote the product for upright placement. Sony has previously stated that the PS5 can be oriented both vertically and horizontally thanks to a plastic base that attaches to the outer white shell.

Both TheCod3r and Wololo maintain their claim that standing a PS5 vertically carries some risk, as it can lead to an uneven spread of the liquid metal intended for cooling the APU. However, there is limited evidence to support this claim. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan announced during CES 2023 that over 30 million PS5 units have been sold globally. He also mentioned that December, the Christmas season, was the console’s biggest sales month, and players should now have an easier time finding a unit from local retailers. It remains uncertain if this applies to India, where PS5s are often sold out within minutes of being available.

In September, Sony quietly made changes to the internals of newly revised PS5 models, initially released in Australia. The new units, with the CFI-1200 number, were 200 grams lighter than the original CFI-1100 variant, as confirmed by tech YouTuber Austin Evans. The updated PS5 also consumed less power and underwent modifications to the heatsink and included an updated motherboard.
