GM EVs to have bidirectional charging technology by 2026

GM is set to release its first-generation Ultium vehicle-to-home bidirectional charger in the fourth quarter alongside the debut of the Chevrolet Silverado EV. Although pricing details have not been disclosed, GM has stated that the bidirectional charger will be moderately priced above a standard charger of the same power level.

This technology will empower consumers to store and transfer energy, enabling them to offset electricity costs during peak demand periods and mitigate the impact of power outages, according to GM.

“Our approach revolves around creating an ecosystem,” explained Hoss Hassani, GM’s Vice President of Charging and Energy, in an interview with Automotive News. “While the EV remains at the core, it does not solely define the value for us as a business or for the customers in terms of experience.”

Other automakers are also embracing bidirectional charging technology. Ford Motor Co. has introduced it in their F-150 Lightning electric pickup. Tesla executives have announced plans to implement bidirectional charging capabilities in their vehicles by 2025, coinciding with GM’s timeline for producing EVs equipped with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard connectors.

Hassani anticipates that initial sales of the charger will vary by state, with California, Texas, New York, Michigan, and Florida likely leading the way.

“Though our educational efforts will be nationwide, some states will inevitably adopt this technology sooner than others,” he commented.

Currently, the primary benefit for consumers is the reassurance of having a backup energy source during blackouts or voltage reductions, Hassani noted.

In the long run, as electric utility companies implement managed charging programs that allow consumers to schedule charging during off-peak hours, customers can save money by taking advantage of lower electricity costs. Furthermore, Hassani believes that consumers will eventually be able to sell excess energy from their vehicles back to the grid for profit.
