PS5 Cloud Streaming Beta Rolls Out to Select PS Plus Premium Members: 4K Support, Save Syncing

Sony has commenced the roll-out of public beta access for cloud gaming on the PS5. According to ResetEra user ArashiGames, selected PS Plus Premium members now have the opportunity to stream certain games with resolutions of up to 4K. While the integration of cloud streaming was confirmed by the company in June, details regarding the supported resolution have only recently emerged. It remains uncertain whether the maximum resolution pertains to the in-game graphical quality or the streaming resolution, but a screenshot suggests that the available resolutions are contingent on the player’s internet connection. Essentially, players are able to enjoy games from the cloud without the need for ownership or downloads.

In the beta phase, testers can choose from four primary resolutions – 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and the aforementioned 2160p (4K). Arashi states that cloud gaming automatically syncs with the player’s game saves, allowing them to pick up where they left off. However, it is important to note that images may be compressed when processed and delivered at high speeds over the internet. Consequently, the distinction between Ultra HD cloud streaming and in-game render quality is relatively inconsequential. This additional feature serves as motivation for players to subscribe to PS Plus Premium/Deluxe, as new games will be consistently added to the platform.

Previously, Sony had referred to the cloud streaming catalog as comprising “supported PS5 games,” and thanks to Arashi, we now know which games are included. The catalog encompasses 12 games, consisting of a mixture of first-party PlayStation titles that have made their way to PC and a selection of smaller third-party entries.

For the sake of comparison, Xbox Cloud Gaming offers game streaming up to 1080p at 60fps, a feature included with the higher-tier Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. In a sense, the upcoming PS5 cloud streaming service is a successor to the PlayStation Now service, which underwent rebranding as part of PlayStation’s revised plans. However, it should be noted that the aforementioned beta test is exclusive to the PS5 and unlike PS Now, game streaming is not possible on a PC. Additionally, the service is currently unavailable in India and several other countries. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has also hinted at Sony’s intriguing and ambitious plans for cloud gaming.

At present, it remains uncertain whether Sony’s upcoming handheld device, Project Q, will support cloud streaming. However, it has been confirmed that Project Q will be limited to 1080p, serving as a remote reflection of a PS5 system owned by the player. It is also worth mentioning that in April, the company apparently sought to hire 22 individuals with expertise in cloud gaming technology.
