Our first look at Lawmen, the next must-watch Paramount+ series from hitmaker Taylor Sheridan

When you ask the average person if they know about The Lone Ranger, the answer is usually yes. This fictional character, a former Texas Ranger who wore a mask and fought outlaws, was a popular staple of American TV in the 1950s and is widely recognized as a cultural icon. However, if you were to ask the average person about Bass Reeves, the first black deputy US Marshal west of the Mississippi River and a legendary figure in real life, the response would likely be different. Reeves’ story will be told in Paramount+’s upcoming series called Lawmen: Bass Reeves.

The Lone Ranger’s adventures were entertaining, but ultimately just made-for-TV fluff where the bad guys always lost. In contrast, Bass Reeves worked as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory during the post-Civil War Reconstruction era. Throughout his career in law enforcement, Reeves managed to capture over 3,000 dangerous criminals without ever sustaining a single injury, even though his hat was shot off on several occasions.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves will premiere on Paramount+ this fall, although the specific release date has yet to be announced. This anthology series will focus on the story of various iconic lawmen and outlets in future seasons.

In the first season of Lawmen, Reeves will be the central character, played by the talented David Oyelowo. The casting choice is particularly inspired, as evident from the teaser trailer above, where Oyelowo effortlessly embodies the role of a rugged and fearless gunslinger, delivering memorable one-liners like “Your wicked days are done.”

Lawmen is produced by Taylor Sheridan, the creator of other successful Paramount+ series such as 1883, 1923, and Tulsa King. The show was created for television by executive producer and showrunner Chad Feehan. Take a look at more first-look images from the upcoming show below.
