Xbox Game Pass: Outer Wilds Among Nine Games Leaving Service on New Year’s Day

Outer Wilds, the critically acclaimed time loop adventure developed by Mobius Digital, is set to leave Xbox Game Pass at the start of the new year. Microsoft’s monthly rotation of games on its subscription service did not mention the removal of these titles in its latest Xbox blog. However, upon scrolling down to the ‘Leaving Soon’ section on the Xbox app, it becomes apparent that there are nine games scheduled to exit the service on January 1, 2023. As this information is displayed on the official Xbox app, it can be considered official.

Outer Wilds stands out as one of the outstanding titles leaving Game Pass. It offers a unique premise where players assume the role of an unnamed space explorer trapped in a time loop. Every 22 minutes, the solar system’s star explodes, resetting the planets and particles to their initial state. It should not be confused with the space-themed RPG The Outer Worlds, which is also available on Game Pass. In Outer Wilds, the objective is to unravel the secrets of an extinct civilization and solve the overarching mystery.

In July, Outer Wilds received an upgrade for Xbox Series S/X through Game Pass, allowing for a smoother 60fps experience. However, the game will soon be departing from the platform.

Other notable titles leaving the service include Square Enix’s Scarlet Nexus, where players master psychokinetic powers to engage in intense hack-and-slash battles and uncover the mysteries of a Brain Punk future. Additionally, The Pedestrian, which was recently added to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe catalogue, will also be removed on January 1.

Earlier this month, Xbox added Hello Neighbor 2 to its subscription service as a day-one launch. In this game, players return to Raven Brooks as an investigative journalist spying on their creepy neighbor. While Hello Neighbor 2 offers a single-player experience, its multiplayer spin-off title, Secret Neighbor, will be disappearing from Game Pass on New Year’s Day.

Xbox Game Pass will bid farewell to the following nine games starting January 1, 2023:

– Outer Wilds

– Scarlet Nexus

– The Pedestrian

– Hello Neighbor 2

– Secret Neighbor

– [remaining games]

Before these games are removed from Game Pass, players have the option to purchase them at a 20% discount. Additionally, Microsoft is currently running its annual Xbox Countdown Sale until January 2, 2023, offering significant discounts on various titles. Games such as Elden Ring, Gotham Knights: Deluxe Edition, and Need for Speed Unbound have seen their first discounts since their initial release.

In December, Xbox Game Pass introduced 11 exciting new additions, including three day-one launches: Hello Neighbor 2, Justin Roiland’s High on Life, and the retro-styled RPG Chained Echoes. The catalog also featured the highly praised Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, allowing players to experience comedic interpretations of all nine episodes from the renowned film series. Metal: Helsinger, a rhythm-based demon-slaying game, has finally made its way to Xbox One as well.
