Baldur’s Gate III localization studio apologizes for omitting contract workers from credits

Apologies have been issued by the studio responsible for translating “Baldur’s Gate III” after their outsourced workers were not credited. In a statement, founder and CEO Marie Amigues of the Altagram Group, acknowledged their mistake and accepted full responsibility, stating, “We apologize for the impact this had and for omitting our freelancers’ names.” Amigues also expressed gratitude to Larian for allowing them to rectify the error promptly by updating the credits section, with the names of the Brazilian Portuguese translators to be included in an upcoming game patch.

Although the credits did not acknowledge the translators Altagram collaborated with, they did credit the company’s executives and department leads. However, the contractors responsible for translating the game into languages other than Brazilian Portuguese were credited separately, as different companies managed those localizations.

Larian Studios, the developer and publisher of “Baldur’s Gate III,” placed the blame on Altagram for this oversight and requested them to address the situation. Altagram swiftly obliged, making the necessary changes to rectify the issue.

Regrettably, outsourced workers involved in game development often go without proper recognition for their contributions. This can significantly impact their future opportunities, as it becomes more challenging for them to demonstrate their involvement in a particular game to prospective employers.

Crediting workers may not be a priority for some localization studios in the future. However, it is likely that certain developers will attempt to utilize advanced technology to translate games into different languages, hoping to reduce costs. Nonetheless, it is essential to acknowledge that localization requires skilled individuals who can not only mechanically translate text but also consider elements like idiomatic expressions and cultural references that may not resonate with a particular audience.
