iPhone 14, 14 Pro owners report battery health drops of 10 percent in less than a year

Some owners of iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are raising concerns similar to the infamous “batterygate” scandal, as their phones are exhibiting more battery degradation than expected within a year of usage. Sam Kohl from AppleTrack tweeted in July that his iPhone 14 Pro had already dropped to a maximum capacity of 90 percent, which is a significantly faster decline compared to his previous iPhones. The thread also reveals numerous other individuals with the same issue.

Kohl further discussed the problem in a recent video, mentioning that it becomes difficult for him to recommend the phone, especially considering its price of $999.

According to Apple’s official statement, iPhone batteries should maintain up to 80 percent of their original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles. The upcoming iPhone 15 series is expected to launch soon, and there are rumors suggesting that these devices will have a battery size increase of 10-18 percent compared to the current models.

Joanna Stern, a senior tech columnist at the Wall Street Journal and former member of The Verge, recently disclosed in her newsletter that her iPhone 14 Pro currently has 88 percent battery capacity. Reports within The Verge vary, with two 14 Pros at 93 and 91 percent capacity, and another at 97 percent. In previous years, most users didn’t experience a decline in reported capacity until at least two years of usage.

Additionally, replacing the battery on an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro after the one-year warranty period is more expensive. The price increased from $69 to $99 last year, although users now have the option of DIY replacement if they prefer not to visit an Apple Store or third-party repair shop.

We have reached out to Apple for further information on these reports and will provide an update if we receive any additional details.
