Jio Phones Purportedly Bag BIS Certification, Hinting at Imminent Launch in India

Reliance is gearing up to launch two new Jio smartphones in the Indian market. Although the official details of these upcoming handsets have not been announced yet, they have reportedly received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website, indicating that their release is imminent. The company is expected to make an announcement about the Jio Phones during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) event on August 28. According to rumors, the Jio Phones will be powered by the Snapdragon 480 SoC, accompanied by 4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage.

In a tweet, tipster Mukul Sharma (@stufflistings) shared a screenshot of the alleged listing of the Jio Phones on the BIS website. The leaked information reveals that the handsets with model numbers JBV161W1 and JBV162W1 obtained approval from BIS on Friday, August 11. Unfortunately, no specifications regarding these smartphones have been disclosed in the listing.

Reliance Jio has not yet disclosed any details regarding the launch of the new Jio Phones. The company’s 46th AGM will take place on August 28 at 2:00pm IST, where Jio Chairman Akash Ambani is expected to make the announcement about these phones.

Rumors surrounding the Jio Phones have been circulating for some time now. Last year, a Jio Phone with the model number Jio LS1654QB5 appeared on the Geekbench benchmarking platform, featuring a Snapdragon 480+ SoC, Adreno 619 GPU, and 4GB of RAM.

Previous leaks suggested that the upcoming 5G handset would include 32GB of internal storage and a 13-megapixel dual rear camera setup. It is likely to ship with Android 12 and boast a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate. An 8-megapixel selfie shooter is also expected. The Jio Phone is rumored to be equipped with a 5,000mAh battery that supports 18W charging.

According to a report by CounterPoint Research, the 5G Jio Phone may be priced between Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 12,000.
