The DoorDash app will nudge you to leave a tip or ask you to increase the tip you already left

Many of you already have food delivery apps like Uber Eats (iOS, Android), Door Dash (iOS, Android), and Grubhub (iOS, Android), to name a few, installed on your phones. These apps allow users to select a restaurant, order a meal, and have it delivered. Additionally, there are apps like Instacart (iOS, Android) and Shipt (iOS, Android) that can be used to get groceries delivered straight to your doorstep without having to visit the supermarket in person.

The DoorDash app prompts customers to add or increase driver tips

An interesting feature offered by DoorDash, a popular food delivery app, is its tipping system. Typically, gig delivery workers are paid below minimum wage and rely on tips to make a decent income. With apps like DoorDash, the app suggests a tip amount for the driver based on the distance they need to travel from the restaurant to the customer’s location, as well as the effort required to complete the delivery. Customers have the flexibility to adjust the tip amount based on a percentage or a custom value.

According to an article by Insider, DoorDash introduced a new feature to its app in June. This feature allows customers to increase a driver’s tip within 30 days after the food order has been completed. Customers who haven’t left a tip for their delivery driver will also receive reminders to do so. Following DoorDash’s lead, other food delivery companies like Uber Eats, Instacart, and Starbucks have implemented similar features in their apps. DoorDash drivers often receive a base pay as low as $2 per delivery, making the tips they receive crucial for their earnings.
Traditionally, customers would leave a tip before receiving their delivery, but now they have the opportunity to reward drivers who have gone the extra mile in their service. Austin Haugen, an executive at DoorDash, stated, “These new nudges and reminders will encourage customers to tip and show their appreciation after their Dasher delivers an order.”

However, some DoorDash drivers are concerned that customers may find the tipping prompts bothersome. Heather Taylor, a DoorDash driver in Corpus Christi, Texas, expressed her thoughts, saying, “I think it would be annoying to 80% of customers.” Nonetheless, she acknowledges that the nudging feature could potentially increase her income. It’s worth noting that some drivers have resorted to pressuring customers into raising their tips during the delivery, although DoorDash strictly prohibits such behavior.

A DoorDash driver explains the reliance on tips

Sergio Avedian, another DoorDash driver and spokesperson for The Rideshare Guy blog, delivers approximately 20 hours a week in Los Angeles. He shares that his base pay on DoorDash and Uber Eats ranges from $1.50 to $3 per order. Avedian remarks, “When the base pay is so low, we have to seek out orders that offer high tips and short distances. We are essentially dependent on tips to make a living.”

DoorDash responded to the concerns, stating, “Customers receive a maximum of one nudge per order that does not include a tip. This practice is not unique to DoorDash and is commonly seen across gig platforms.” Even in 2020, a year when gig workers thrived due to the pandemic, a survey conducted by the Economic Policy Institute revealed that 14% of gig workers earned less than the federal minimum wage, and 29% earned less than the minimum wage set in their respective states.

When Instacart introduced its tipping prompt feature, the company mentioned, “We’ve implemented tipping prompts to encourage customers to consider increasing their tip whenever they rate a shopper with five stars. The prompts also remind customers to recognize their shopper’s hard work by leaving a tip if they initially chose not to.” Uber Eats also emphasized its efforts to enhance the tipping experience for drivers and couriers in a statement to Insider.
