One person was dead and two others injured after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) ran into the reception of a hotel at the coastal village of Goa’s Anjuna on Sunday.
The person killed in the incident was the owner of the hotel — Remedia Mary Albuquerque (57), while two other staff — Shiv Mangal Dindo (22) and Rupa Paras (31) — were injured.
The driver of the SUV, a Ford Endeavour was identified as one 42-year-old Sachin Venu Gopal Kurup, a resident of Pune’s Kondhwa. Kurup has been arrested and booked under the charges of culpable homicide, a Hindustan Times report said.
The accused was going to the La Maior Roma Resort in Anjuna’s Vagator, police said. The 2-ton SUV went straight into the reception after Kurup lost hold of the vehicle. Albuquerque and the two staffers were present at the reception counter at the time of the incident.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jivba Dalvi said that the accused had driven his car in a “reckless and dangerous manner, knowing full well that it could result in the death of any innocent person”. Dalvi added that the hotel owner was standing right near the counter when the SUV swooped into the reception.
Previous Accidents Caused by Speeding Vehicles
Just a couple days ago, at least four people were killed after an oil tanker rammed into a car and a pickup on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway on November 10.
Investigating officer of Bilaspur police station, Vinod Kumar said that the oil tanker — which was coming from Jaipur — broke the divider and hit a car after which the car caught fire due to the CNG cylinders present inside it.
After hitting the car, the tankers also crashed with a pickup van on the highway in which the driver of the van died on the spot.
Further, a speeding electric bus lost control and crashed into multiple cars and scooters in Delhi’s Rohini leaving one person dead and another dead on November 4. The video of the incident — captured by CCTV — shows a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus hitting multiple vehicles including a car and an e-rickshaw and a bike and then dragging them. Before coming to a stop, the bus also rammed into several scooters parked near the pavement.
In another incident in July, two women were killed while another was seriously injured when a speeding car rammed into morning walkers in the early hours of July 4 in Hyderabad’s Bandlaguda area.
After the accident, which took place on a main road under Narsingi police station limits, the driver abandoned the car and fled from the spot, according to reports.

A horrific video of the incident captured on CCTV shows the car, which can clearly be seen in an extremely high speed, skidding on the road before ramming into the three women and leaving a plume of dust.
Following the incident, the injured were rushed to the hospital for medical care and the bodies of the deceased were transferred to the mortuary at Osmania Hospital.
