Samsung’s highly anticipated Unpacked event is happening on January 17, where the company will unveil its latest lineup of Galaxy devices. The new Galaxy S24 Series
The star of the show will undoubtedly be the new Galaxy S24 lineup, succeeding last year’s S23 series. We expect to see the Galaxy S24, S24 Plus, and S24 Ultra models that represent the best of Samsung’s smartphone technology.
Rumours point to the S24 and S24 Plus models looking similar to their S23 counterparts with centered punch-hole front cameras and triple rear camera setups. The S24 Ultra may make the jump to a flat display for the first time. It’s also expected to feature a titanium frame, like the iPhone 15 Pro models.
As usual, you’ll have to pick between the Galaxy S24’s 6.1-inch, the Galaxy S24 Plus’s 6.6-inch, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s 6.8-inch panels. However, according to a recent leak, the vanilla and Plus models could be marginally larger, at 6.17 inches and 6.65 inches, respectively. The S24 Ultra’s refresh rate is also rumoured to top out at 144Hz – the smoothest ever on any Samsung smartphone display.
Under the hood, all three phones will likely be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, although some regions might get an Exynos 2400 instead.
Other hardware announcements
In addition to the phones, we could see Samsung unveil the rumoured Galaxy Fit 3 fitness tracker. This would mark the company’s return to dedicated fitness bands after a years-long hiatus. Leaked renders preview a sleek, minimalist design.
Introduction of Galaxy AI
The Galaxy Unpacked event is unique because this year, AI is the theme – and Samsung is ready to show its hand. The company already teased its new generative AI system, and Unpacked will serve as Galaxy AI’s official launch and demo.
Samsung is framing Galaxy AI as its answer to chatbots like ChatGPT. The company describes the system as a “comprehensive mobile AI experience” and “universal intelligence on your phone.” Communication, productivity, and creativity are some of the areas Galaxy AI will show up on Samsung phones.
Powered by Samsung’s Gauss AI system, Galaxy AI will consist of language, image, and code generators accessible through Samsung devices. Some features will run locally, while cloud connectivity enables more advanced capabilities.
Galaxy AI promises to seamlessly integrate into Samsung’s ecosystem through One UI and smartphones like the new S24 series. With Google, Microsoft, and others making splashes in AI, Unpacked will be Samsung’s opportunity to assert itself.
Release of One UI 6.1
On the software side, expect Samsung to launch its next iteration of One UI for Android. Version 6.1 will come standard on the Galaxy S24 line and eventually roll out to older Galaxy devices in the months following Unpacked.
One UI 6.1 will build upon Android 14 with new personalisation options, productivity features, and Galaxy AI integration. Unpacked attendees and livestream viewers will get the very first look at Samsung’s refined user experience.
