PlayStation 5 Pro spec leaks suggest 3x power boost on the way | Technology News

It’s the scoop that PlayStation fans have been waiting for – details on Sony’s next-gen PS5 upgrade are finally surfacing, and if the leaks are legit, the ‘PS5 Pro’ sounds like a beast, at least on paper.

According to reports from reputable insiders, Sony has been quietly cooking up a souped-up version of the PS5, codenamed “Trinity.” The specs that got spilled suggest the console will pack a serious punch, with a GPU that’s potentially up to three times more powerful than the current PS5 models.

According to a purported leaked document that YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead has gotten their hands on, the console packs a staggering 67 teraflops of 16-bit floating point horsepower, which translates to around 33.5 teraflops of single-precision compute power. To put that in perspective, the regular PS5 sits at a modest 10.28 teraflops.

But that’s not all – rumor has it that the PS5 Pro will also deliver up to 3x the ray tracing performance of the base PS5, and in some cases, even 4 times the ray tracing muscle.

As if that wasn’t enough, Sony is apparently working on its own upscaling tech called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Think of it as Sony’s answer to NVIDIA’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR, using machine learning to upscale images to potentially 8K in future updates.

Festive offer

The fact that multiple insiders are corroborating the same details lends credibility to the leaks – Tom Henderson at Insider Gaming has confirmed that these leaks do hold water. If the reports are accurate, first-party Sony studios have already been putting the PS5 Pro dev kits through their paces since last September, with third-party devs getting their hands on the hardware in January.

With a rumored release window of November 2024, it looks like Sony is trying to pull off an ambitious timeline. But if they manage to deliver on these insane specs, the PS5 Pro could be a gamechanger.
