Apple’s generative AI ambitions lead to talks with Chinese search giant Baidu: Report | Technology News

It’s no secret that Apple has some big AI ambitions for its next major iOS release. The rumor mill has been buzzing about potential partnerships to bring generative AI to the iPhone. And now, it looks like the Cupertino tech giant is casting a wide net in its hunt for the best AI models.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that Apple was in talks with Google to license its impressive Gemini AI for upcoming iOS 18 features. Apparently, they’ve also been chatting up OpenAI about possibly integrating their viral ChatGPT technology. But the latest scoop is that Apple has its eye on an AI alliance in China too.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple recently held discussions with Baidu about using the Chinese tech company’s AI models. This would allow Apple to serve up AI smarts to its customers in China without running afoul of regulations there that require official approval for AI systems.

While heavyweights like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT are non-existent in China due to censorship, over 40 domestic AI models have gotten the government’s stamp of approval so far – including Baidu’s much-hyped ErnieBot.

Apple may be considering a multi-provider AI strategy. No single partnership has been finalised yet, but the wheels are in motion for deals to get locked down ahead of Apple’s annual developer conference in June, setting the stage for an AI-infused iOS 18 unveiling.

Festive offer

Rumours suggest a hybrid on-device/cloud model where some AI processing happens locally on iPhones, while more intensive number-crunching gets offloaded to remote servers powered by partner tech like Gemini, ChatGPT, or Ernie.

While Apple reportedly does have its own in-house generative AI in the works, the company seems intent on augmenting its capabilities through these external partnerships. After years of upstaging its rivals in mobile chips and cameras, perhaps Apple is hoping to gain an edge in the AI race through some savvy partnerships.
