Sun Spews X1-Class Solar Flare, Geomagnetic Storm To Hit Earth On May 31, NOAA Warns

Sun is again getting active with the sunspot that spewed a strong solar flare. Here is what NOAA forecasters have said.

Potential G2-Class Geomagnetic Storm on May 31: Solar Flares and CMEs Impact Earth’s Space Weather

The fear of solar storms is again revolving around our heads. The old sunspot AR3664, which had unleashed a powerful solar flare impacting Earth with the strongest auroras in the last two decades, is still active. NOAA experts have confirmed that on May 29th, it produced an X1.4-class solar flare.

NOAA forecasters have highlighted the possibility of G2-class geomagnetic storms on May 31 due to a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) propelled into space by a recent X-flare. The CME is expected to graze Earth’s magnetic field, causing geomagnetic disturbances. However, the forecast remains uncertain with NOAA predicting a significant impact, while NASA models suggest the CME may narrowly miss Earth.

NOAA has further confirmed in its forecast that “G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) geomagnetic storming is likely to commence by late 31 May and continue into 01 Jun due to flanking CME effects from the aforementioned X1.4 flare and subsequent CME eruption of 29 May.”
