SpaceX gets green light to launch Starship on 4th test flight tomorrow

SpaceX is set to launch its towering Starship rocket system on its fourth test flight as early as Thursday, a crucial milestone in the company’s quest to develop a fully reusable launch vehicle for deep space exploration.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted SpaceX a license, clearing the way for the nearly 400-foot-tall (122-meter), two-stage rocket to lift off from the company’s facilities in South Texas.

The primary objectives of this test flight are to execute a controlled atmospheric reentry of the Starship spacecraft and achieve a “soft splashdown” of the Super Heavy booster in the Gulf of Mexico, simulating a landing.

This marks a significant step towards demonstrating the reusability of both components, a key feature that could dramatically reduce launch costs.

After separating from the Super Heavy booster, the Starship spacecraft will continue its journey, aiming to survive the intense heat of atmospheric reentry – a critical challenge that led to its disintegration during the previous test in March. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stated that the main goal is to “get much deeper into the atmosphere during reentry, ideally through max heating.”

Starship represents the future of SpaceX’s satellite launch and astronaut transportation business, designed to be fully reusable and more powerful than the company’s workhorse Falcon 9 rocket.
