WWE Clash at the Castle 2024 preview: CM Punk is here to ruin Drew McIntyre’s return home

WWE Clash at the Castle 2024 takes place today (Sat., June 15) from OVO Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland.

The event begins at 1:00 pm ET with the Countdown show leading right on into the main course at 2 pm ET on Peacock in the U.S., WWE Network everywhere else, or your local cable pay-per-view provider.

CM Punk is here to ruin Drew McIntyre’s return home

Everything is shaping up for this to be the best weekend of Drew McIntyre’s professional career. He is back home in Scotland to challenge Damian Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship at WWE Clash at the Castle, and the rest of The Judgment Day members are banned from ringside. This is exactly how Drew drew it up; there’s practically nothing that can stop him from winning the world title in front of his adoring crowd.

Well, except for CM Punk.

Punk is rumored to be in Scotland, and the only reason he’d be there is to try to ruin Drew’s return home. These two guys have been bitter enemies all year long, and CM has promised to make McIntyre’s life a living hell. Punk already screwed Drew out of the belt once at WrestleMania 40, allowing Priest to win the gold via Money in the Bank cash-in. If Punk really is in Scotland today, then he will have to make an appearance at some point during this match and try to screw Drew out of the belt for a second time.

On top of that, McIntyre has some added pressure to win this match given that he blew it in the main event of Clash at the Castle two years ago in the UK. Can Drew find a way to overcome (probable) interference from Punk to avoid suffering this humiliation yet again?

The rest of the card

Here are the four remaining matches that are currently advertised for Clash at the Castle:

Cody Rhodes (c) vs. AJ Styles in an “I Quit” match for the Undisputed WWE Championship

When General Manager Nick Aldis initially denied AJ’s request for a championship rematch against Rhodes, the Phenomenal One did what any great heel would do; he duped Cody with a fake retirement speech and lured Rhodes into giving him a title shot. But Cody specifically asked for it to be an I Quit match, which means one of these men will be humbled tonight when they utter those two words.

There’s no quit in Cody, as evidenced by the fact that he wrestled an entire Hell in a Cell match with a torn pec a couple years ago. Perhaps Styles will have to resort to threatening harm on Mama Rhodes if he wants the best chance to force Cody to surrender. Meanwhile, Rhodes isn’t a submission specialist, so his plan might involve hitting Styles with an infinite loop of Cross Rhodes until the man finally gives up.

Bayley (c) vs. Piper Niven for the WWE Women’s Championship

Chelsea Green and Piper Niven won a tag team match against Bayley and Naomi last month, and now here Piper is in her home country challenging for championship gold. She has ambushed Bayley multiple times in recent weeks and is determined to crush her in this title match. Chelsea Green does most of the talking for their side and seems to think that a win for her partner will make both of them the new women’s champion. Bayley is still the favorite and has warned Piper that she will make her experience the horrible feeling of losing the most important match of her career in front of her friends and family.

Sami Zayn (c) vs. Chad Gable for the Intercontinental Championship

Chad Gable can’t get over the fact that Sami Zayn stole his storybook ending of defeating GUNTHER for the Intercontinental championship at WrestleMania. Gable turned heel after Sami retained the belt against him in Montreal, and has since become very abusive towards the other members of Alpha Academy. Otis is conflicted on what to do about Gable’s recent behavior, but so far the big man refuses to follow Zayn’s advice to walk away from Alpha Academy. However, Otis has teased attacking Chad more than once, and the audience will lose their minds when he finally has enough of Chad’s shit. But does Gable have a Plan B lurking in the background in the form of The Creed Brothers?

Jade Cargill & Bianca Belair (c) vs. Alba Fyre & Isla Dawn vs. Shayna Baszler & Zoey Stark for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship

Cargill and Belair are so confident that nobody can beat them that they are the ones who actually asked for this three-way title match. Fyre and Dawn are the home country heroes, but it doesn’t seem like any women can slow down the juggernaut that is Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair. Baszler & Stark defeated Fyre & Dawn on Raw this week in less than three minutes, so I guess that makes them slightly bigger threats to the champions in kayfabe.

Summary

All eyes will be on the main event to see if Punk shows up to screw McIntyre over in his home country. That’s a good enough hook to tune into this show regardless of what’s booked on the undercard.
