Donald Trump, former US President, has been hit in the ear in an assassination bid by a gunman at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania today. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, has been killed. A spectator was also killed in the shooting and two others were “critically” injured, officials said.

The 78-year-old Republican presidential candidate, whose team said he was “fine”, was attacked when he had just started his speech. Blood was clearly visible across his cheek and mouth.

In his first reaction to the shooting at his rally, he said in a statement he “was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear”.

President Joe Biden, who will face Trump in the upcoming US Presidential election, said the incident was “sick” and added that there was “no place in America for this kind of violence.”

UN chief Antonio Guterres has “unequivocally” condemned the assassination attempt that wounded former US president Donald Trump.

“The Secretary-General unequivocally condemns this act of political violence. He sends his best wishes to President Trump for a speedy recovery,” his spokesperson said in a statement.

Trump Seen For First Time After Shooting Incident

Donald Trump has been seen in a video walking off his plane hours after he was injured in the shocking shooting incident.

In a video posted by his deputy communications director on social media, the former US president is seen in a navy suit and white shirt without a tie, while descending a staircase from his plane.

His right ear, which was injured in the attempt, cannot be seen in the footage. 

The New York Times reported that he was in New Jersey, where he will spend the night.

“We are grateful that there were not more victims,” the FBI said, while confirming that all three victims from the Donald Trump rally – one who was killed and two who were injured – are adult males.

The FBI has asked the public to share any information they have that may assist with the investigation into the shooting incident.

The FBI has also confirmed the ‘assassination attempt’ against Donald Trump.

“This evening we had what we are calling an assassination attempt against our former president Donald Trump,” Special Agent Kevin Rojek told reporters in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“We will release details on the shooter when we are 100% sure about the identity,” the FBI said at the press conference.

“We didn’t have any specific information related to this event,” the FBI official said.

US President Joe Biden has spoken to Donald Trump, a White House official said, after the Republican was injured in an apparent assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.

“This evening, President Biden spoke to former President Trump,” the official was quoted as saying by AFP.

He added that the US incumbent would receive an updated briefing from law enforcement officials on the incident.

The alleged shooter who injured US presidential candidate Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania was outside the event grounds, a local prosecutor said.

“I don’t know how he would have gotten to the location where he was, but he was outside the grounds. And I think that’s something that we’re going to have to figure out how he got there,” Butler County district attorney Richard Goldinger was quoted as saying by the news agency AFP.

The Secret Service said that multiple shots came from ‘elevated position’ outside Trump rally venue in Butler.

“During former President Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on the evening of July 13 at around 6:15 p.m., a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue,” it said in an official statement. 

“US Secret Service personnel neutralised the shooter, who is now deceased. The US Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and the former President is safe and being evaluated. One spectator was killed, and two spectators were critically injured. The incident is currently under investigation and the Secret Service has formally notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the statement read further.

In his first reaction to shooting at his rally, Donald Trump said he”was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of his right ear”.

“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured,” he said in a statement.

“It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. The suspected shooter has been confirmed dead, along with one bystander, US media reported.

A second bystander may also have been hit.

The shooting took place shortly after Donald Trump took the stage at his final campaign rally before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next week.
