A beginner’s guide to beginning Baldur’s Gate 3

After six long years of development and three years of early access, Baldur’s Gate 3 has finally been released worldwide. The game is a massive undertaking, boasting an impressive 174 hours of cutscenes and over 17,000 possible endings. Given the scope of the game and the limited time I had with it, I can provide some valuable insights, tips, and tricks to help you navigate the first 20 hours.

First and foremost, ensure that your computer meets the recommended specifications. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a hefty game, requiring around 120 gigs of space. My three-year-old computer with an Intel i5-10400, 16 gigs of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 falls within the recommended range, and I can tell that the game is resource-intensive from the sound of my desktop fans constantly whirring. So make sure you have a capable rig or consider waiting until the game is available on consoles, with the PS5 launch scheduled for September 6th and the Xbox launch to follow.

If you have been playing the early access version of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is recommended that you delete your saved files to avoid any potential issues with save corruption. Larian Studios, the game’s developer, has taken measures to ensure a smooth transition into the launch version, but it’s best to start fresh.

Save early, save often, and be prepared to face challenges. One of the main frustrations I encountered was the game’s sparse autosave feature. Combined with the fact that your party can easily perish, the early game can be quite challenging. Baldur’s Gate 3 is essentially Dungeons and Dragons in video game form, so combat should be approached with a strategic mindset. Even seemingly simple encounters can turn deadly, as I learned when a group of low-level goblins caught my party off guard and wiped us out. Therefore, save frequently, even during combat, to avoid losing progress and keep your party members alive.

Don’t fret over the intricacies of character classes and abilities. Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a plethora of options that can be overwhelming, especially for newcomers to the D&D or Baldur’s Gate series. However, the game does an excellent job of presenting each character’s abilities and explaining how and when to use them effectively. For instance, although I didn’t fully understand the capabilities of my rogue character, Astarion, the game taught me that he excels in stealth and can take advantage of distractions to maximize his effectiveness. Similarly, I initially underestimated the value of the cleric character, Shadowheart, but soon realized her versatility in guiding conversations and negotiating with NPCs. So, when faced with the myriad choices and descriptions, choose what appeals to you, and the game will guide you along the way.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is an immersive and complex game, but don’t let that overwhelm you. Use these tips as a starting point for your adventure, and remember to save your progress frequently. Good luck and enjoy your journey through Faerûn!
