Giant viruses have been found to possess a variety of unique and whimsical shapes, as revealed by new images obtained by researchers. One example is a virus with fibers that resemble a freshly buzzed haircut. Another virus, named “Gorgon,” has tube-like appendages protruding from its shell, while another virus exhibits flaps that resemble the head, limbs, and tail of a turtle. These diverse shapes suggest that the structural diversity of giant viruses has been underestimated, according to virologist Matthias Fischer and his colleagues from the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany.
Since the discovery of the first giant virus in 2003, scientists have discovered a wide range of giant viruses by collecting genetic material from the environment. These giant viruses are significantly larger, about 10 to 50 times the diameter of viruses that cause the common cold. Genetic data indicate that giant viruses are diverse, widespread, and abundant. However, our understanding of their biology remains limited. Microbiologist Steven Wilhelm from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville explains that genetics alone cannot reveal important information about a virus’s behavior, such as who it infects and its possible functions.
