According to Bella Ramsey, The Last of Us Season 2 is Likely to Release in Late 2024 or Early 2025

The highly anticipated second season of The Last of Us is expected to debut in late 2024 or early 2025, according to lead star Bella Ramsey. During an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, Ramsey confirmed that shooting will likely take place at the end of this year or the beginning of next. This aligns with Pedro Pascal’s previous statements suggesting that production on the second season might commence in 2023. The HBO show’s second chapter will adapt events from The Last of Us Part II, the divisive and violent sequel to the original game. Co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have revealed that the story will span multiple seasons, as the game is longer and more action-packed than its predecessor.

Ramsey stated in an interview with The Independent, “It will be a while… So, it’ll probably be the end of 2024, early 2025.” Given the length and complexity of The Last of Us Part II, it makes sense to divide the story into smaller parts and spread it across multiple seasons. Mazin hinted in an interview with GQ that the series might extend beyond season 3, leaving the possibility open for a more detailed adaptation. This could also be driven by HBO’s desire to maximize the franchise’s success. Mazin has promised some exciting elements in the upcoming season, including an increased number of infected on screen and action-packed set pieces, addressing one of the criticisms fans had about the first season.

Recently, Druckmann teased the second season by sharing a poster featuring a strong forearm gripping a hammer tightly, accompanied by the caption “No TLoU on HBO tonight. But Season 2 is already on its way! Endure & survive!” The image hints at the presence of Abby Anderson, an important character from The Last of Us Part II, who had a violent introduction and serves as a playable character alongside Ellie and Joel in the game. The game’s non-linear storytelling, with flashbacks and alternating perspectives, presents a challenge for the creators in adapting it for the show. Mazin, however, assured that he has a solid plan in place and that some aspects may be flipped to better resonate with the audience. “There are going to be things that are going to be different, and there are things that are going to be identical. There are things that are going to be added and enriched… Our goal remains exactly what it was for the first season, which is to deliver a show that makes fans happy,” Mazin stated in the interview.

The Last of Us season 2 will feature Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprising their roles as Joel and Ellie, respectively. Druckmann emphasized that Ramsey is an integral part of the cast, stating, “We are extremely lucky to have Bella… and the only way we would ever consider recasting Bella is if she said, ‘I don’t want to work with you guys anymore.’ And even then, we’re not sure we would grant her that. We might force her to come back this season.” Gabriel Luna is expected to return as Joel’s brother Tommy, alongside Rutina Wesley as his wife Maria.

The highly anticipated second season of The Last of Us is slated for release in late 2024 or early 2025.
