The recent trend on social media, ‘Ban Adipurush’, has sparked disappointment among many. Prabhas and Kriti Sanon’s mythological drama has garnered criticism for allegedly hurting Hindi sentiments and containing cringe-worthy dialogues. Adipurush, inspired by the epic Ramayana, had reserved a seat for Lord Hanuman in every theater where it was screened. However, this did not shield the film from the widespread backlash it has received. The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has now written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging for a ban on the screening of this Om Raut-directed film.

The makers of Adipurush have already announced their decision to alter five dialogues in response to public backlash. AICWA, however, demands a complete ban on the film, stating that it “hurts every Indian in the country and across the globe.” In a letter to the Prime Minister, AICWA expressed its concerns over the screenplay and dialogues that defame the image of Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman, ultimately offending the religious sentiments of Hindus and Sanatan Dharma followers.

AICWA further added, “Prabhu Shri Ram is a God for everyone in India, regardless of their religious faith. However, this movie portrays Lord Ram and even Ravan in a video game-like manner, with dialogues that offend every Indian in the country and worldwide. We respectfully request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to order the immediate ban of Adipurush in theaters and on OTT platforms.” The association also called for an FIR to be filed against the director, Om Raut, the writer, Manoj Muntashir Shukla, and the producers of the movie. Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Saif Ali Khan were criticized for being part of a movie that AICWA deemed “a disgraceful representation” of Shri Ram and Ramayan.

Adipurush faced a significant setback at the box office on Monday, with a massive 77% drop in attendance. The negative public response and word of mouth resulted in empty ticket windows. Additionally, the Nepal government banned all Hindi films amidst the Adipurush controversy, which stemmed from disputes over Sita’s birthplace. According to the Ramayana, Sita was born in Janakpur, which falls within Nepalese territory, and Lord Ram came there to marry her.

Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah instructed cinema halls in the Nepal capital not to screen the film until the makers rectify the mistake regarding Sita’s birthplace. As a result of the Mayor’s warning, cinema halls in Kathmandu ceased to showcase ‘Adipurush’ due to security concerns.
